I can't believe I'll be moving and leaving Hawaii in just 3 days! With it coming up so fast, I've been thinking a lot about some of my favorite island foods. Taro donuts are one of my favorites that I just recently discovered.
Taro is a starchy root vegetable that is used in some Asian, Pacific Island, and even Brazilian cooking. Maybe you've heard or tried poi when visiting Hawaii. It looks kind of like a gray paste.
Taro donuts don't taste like poi though. They are slightly sweet and melt in your mouth. Add of course they are fried and covered in sugar so who doesn't like that! Here's a simple recipe to make your own if you can get your hands on some taro pancake mix. Add a little purple food coloring if you want it to be extra purple.
I've been fortunate to have lived in a place like Hawaii and met people who have shared with me their cultures from around the world through their food. Here is my first of many unique recipes for sweets from around the world.
What's your favorite ethnic dessert?
